Chapter 21

A Mother’s Concern

Mother, we’ll be fine. The Guards have no reason to suspect us, and we’ve done nothing wrong,” Sim said.

“Nothing wrong? Sim, we’re harboring a fugitive! If the Royal Guard are here, it must be serious. If they find him here, they could…” She started crying. Her voice was low and serious. It was a tone that Sim rarely ever heard from her. In fact, the last time he heard it was when he’d gone out to search for his father. He didn’t need her to finish that sentence; he already knew what she was thinking. They could take me away, like Father. Sim knew that was a possibility and accepted it. It would be a path that Father would be proud of.

“I know. Father knew. This is more than about whether or not this man deserves to be hunted by the Crown. This is about protecting a guest of our home. We have a duty to protect our guest,” Sim said. There was a passion in his voice. Since Father was taken, Sim had never felt as close to his father as he did in this moment. He could feel his strength coursing through him. He felt a burning in his chest where his pendant rested.

“Sim…you need to let go of what happened. Your father, my husband, is gone. He hasn’t returned in over twelve years. If you get in the way of the Crown… Sim, the same thing will happen to you…and I can’t bear it! I can’t lose the rest of my world, Sim!” she said, weeping.

Sim felt something within himself bubbling up to the surface, an anger that hadn’t shown itself in years came roaring back. How could she possibly give up on him? My father is still out there, somewhere. I can feel it. And no one ever confirmed that he had died, yet everyone acted like the matter was settled. Sim’s thoughts swirled in his head, all pointing toward the injustice that was done to his father and the complete lack of concern for him. The same event was playing out again. Everyone was scared of the Crown. They’d give up their own sense of what was right to feel safe. The villages that sold out to Crom were the same way. Father fought back against that sentiment. He knew one thing that he repeated to Sim time and time again, and Sim never forgot those words.

“Asairde is our strength and our shield. Why should we fear any men?” Sim declared. He not only repeated the exact words his father spoke to him but used the same exact tone. Even though Sim couldn’t quite explain how he knew of Asairde’s protection, he just knew.

“You can protect this family by turning in this man. There’s no shame in being loyal to your own kingdom, and there’s no doubt this man is an enemy of the Crown if the Royal Guard is here! How do you know that Asairde isn’t telling you to turn in this man?” Mother pleaded.
